The Chief Executive Officer of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Alfred Vanderpuije believes he will continue to be in office despite attempts by some disgruntled youth groups especially from the Convention People’s Party (CPP) to get him out of office.

He said their actions are geared towards derailing the President’s “Better Ghana Agenda”.

About a hundred youth of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and some traders on Thursday demonstrated through the principal streets of Accra, calling for the immediate resignation of the Accra mayor for alleged “insensitivity” during the demolition of structures in the metropolis.

According to Ernest Yeboah, the deputy National Youth Organiser of the CPP, the AMA boss has “ruthlessly and heartlessly thrown thousands of women and children into the streets making them homeless, jobless and incapable of furthering their education or providing for their needs. ”

However, speaking on the Citi Eyewitness News on Thursday, Mr. Vanderpuije stated that the AMA is poised for development and would not be disrupted until it achieves its objectives.

Recounting some of his achievements since he assumed office in 2009, the mayor said Accra has been transformed from the status as one of the dirtiest cities in Africa to one of the finest on the continent within three years. He also mentioned that traffic situation in the capital has reduced drastically under his leadership.

He said his administration has managed to curtail the disaster situation in the capital and cannot fathom why a youth group will call for his head.

Mr. Vanderpuije entreated all Ghanaians to support President Mills’ “Better Ghana Agenda” and avoid attempts to derail the development agenda of the government.
