Imane Khelif of Algeria secured the Olympic gold medal in women’s boxing at the Paris 2024 Games, capping a tumultuous journey marked by controversy over gender eligibility.
The 25-year-old boxer triumphed with a unanimous decision victory over Chinese world champion Yang Liu in the welterweight division.
The win came a year after Khelif was disqualified from the World Championships for reportedly failing a gender eligibility test.
Throughout the match, Khelif was buoyed by a spirited crowd of Algerian supporters and maintained dominance from the opening bell.
Her celebration was marked by confident dancing in the ring before the final verdict was announced.
Yang Liu, displaying sportsmanship, lifted Khelif’s arm in a gesture of respect following the decision, contrasting with the tension that had characterized some earlier matches.
Khelif’s coach celebrated by lifting her onto his shoulders and parading her around the arena in an unfiltered joy display.
“This is my dream. I am thrilled,” Khelif told the BBC. “Eight years of work, no sleep. I want to thank everyone in Algeria. I am a strong woman.”
Khelif’s path to gold was fraught with controversy. Her previous disqualification led to scepticism within the boxing community about her eligibility.
The situation was further complicated when Italian boxer Angela Carini withdrew from their bout after only 46 seconds, which fueled public criticism of Khelif. Carini later issued an apology for her actions.
Despite the controversies, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) upheld Khelif’s right to compete.
IOC President Thomas Bach underscored the complexity of gender eligibility issues in sports, affirming Khelif’s participation amid the ongoing debate.
