The Korle Bu Chapter of the Federation of Allied Health Professionals has called off its strike action at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, effective August 5, 2024.
The strike began on August 2 to protest the hospital’s refusal to appoint an independent body to manage its operations.
The federation, comprising 18 professional associations, including the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists, the Ghana Physiotherapy Association, and the Ghana Society of Radiographers, had withdrawn outpatient services to demand the establishment of a dedicated directorate to oversee their work.
The group’s primary demand was for an improvement in their management under the hospital’s Medical Directorate, which they argued was necessary.
The decision to suspend the strike comes after productive discussions with Health Minister Dr Bernard Okoe-Boye and other stakeholders.
According to a statement from the Ghana Federation of Allied Health Professions, Health Minister Dr Bernard Okoe-Boye has made a strong commitment to resolving the issue within seven days, following productive discussions with the federation and other stakeholders, instilling confidence in the government’s actions.
The National Labour Commission (NLC) has played a crucial role in this process, scheduling a meeting for August 6, 2024, to facilitate negotiations and seek a resolution, instilling hope for a speedy resolution.
The statement from the Ghana Federation of Allied Health Professions outlined the reasons for suspending the strike, noting that the Minister of Health has acknowledged their concerns and committed to a timely resolution.
The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital Board has also informed the leadership that a Directorate of Allied Health Professions has been established at the hospital. The NLC’s intervention has further contributed to the decision to halt the strike.
The federation urged its members to advocate for fair and equitable representation in managing all implementing agencies, including the Ghana Health Service and teaching hospitals nationwide.
