The HOPSA 2001 Year Group has initiated a landmark water sustainability project at Holy Child School in Cape Coast, mobilizing alumni support to address chronic water shortages ahead of the institution’s 80th anniversary celebrations.

Dubbed “Reliable Water, Every Drop Empowers Her,” the initiative will boost the school’s daily water capacity by 20,000 gallons, benefiting over 3,000 students and staff.

Led by the “Sapphires” cohort marking their 25th graduation anniversary, the project aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goal 6 on clean water access. “This intervention tackles decades of water insecurity that have disrupted academic activities and sanitation,” said Anita Nadia Attah, president of the 2001 alumni group. The launch event attracted prominent figures including UPSA Law School Dean Professor Kofi Abotsi and businessman Ibrahim Mahama, who pledged full implementation support through his construction firm.

Professor Abotsi highlighted the gendered impact of water scarcity in girls’ education: “When young women spend hours seeking water instead of studying, we undermine their potential.” His remarks underscored the project’s significance for a historic institution that has educated generations of Ghanaian female leaders.

The initiative has galvanized cross-generational alumni support, with pledges from multiple year groups including HOPSA 1980s and 2000s cohorts. Mahama emphasized sustainable maintenance as critical, committing his engineering team to ensure long-term functionality.

As the Sapphires prepare to host next year’s anniversary celebrations, they continue seeking patrons to join this legacy project. The water system represents both practical infrastructure improvement and symbolic commitment to empowering Holy Child’s next generation – ensuring students focus on learning rather than survival. With implementation underway, the project sets a benchmark for alumni-driven educational interventions nationwide.
