Mr Alfred Asiedu Adjei, the Presiding Member, Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has called on members of the various assemblies to own the Green Ghana project to ensure its sustainability and improve the climate for the present and future generations.

Mr Adjei made the call in an interview with journalists when he joined the AMA Chief Executive, Mrs Elizabeth Naa Kwatsoe Tawiah Sackey, and the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, for the tree planting exercise in Accra.

He expressed gratitude to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the initiative, which, he said, would go a long way to replenish the degraded environment for healthy living. “Planting the trees is not as difficult as maintaining them. It is relatively important to maintain them by watering, pruning, and manuring to ensure that the core vision of this mission is achieved,” The Presiding Member said.

“We are doing this today because we want a greener environment today and tomorrow, so if we plant them and leave them at the mercy of the weather we will achieve nothing, we will be back to square one and that will be a waste of time and resources.”

“For this reason, I call on all assembly members and all Ghanaians to play their part in making sure the seedlings planted today survive to protect the future generation.”

Mr Adjei said the assemblies should lead the residents to plant trees in all open spaces and ensure they were maintained, watered, and pruned to ensure growth.

Mr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South, who took part in the exercise, appealed to Ghanaians not to politicise the exercise but rather promote it for a clean environment and mitigate the effects of climate change.
