Residents of Ghana’s Amasaman District will experience a temporary water supply interruption from March 1 to 7, 2025, as the Ghana Water Limited (GWL) undertakes urgent maintenance at its Nsawam Treatment Plant.
The shutdown, confirmed in an official statement by the utility provider, aims to address infrastructure upgrades essential for stabilizing long-term water distribution in the region.
Communities directly impacted include Amasaman Township, Abehenease, Toman, Sapeiman, Pobiman, Obeyeyie, Daaresalam, Fise, Amanfrom, and sections of Pokuase, with ripple effects anticipated in neighboring areas. GWL has advised households and businesses to stockpile sufficient water reserves to mitigate daily disruptions during the seven-day period.
Mrs. Solace A. M. Akomeah, Communications Manager for GWL’s Accra West Region, emphasized that the maintenance is a proactive measure to “enhance system efficiency and reduce future service interruptions.” While acknowledging the inconvenience, she urged patience, stating, “This short-term sacrifice is necessary to ensure reliable access for all customers moving forward.”
The announcement has sparked mixed reactions locally. Some residents praised GWL’s transparency in advance notice, while others expressed concerns over storage capacity limitations, particularly for low-income households reliant on public taps. Community leaders have called for equitable contingency measures, including temporary water rationing or mobile tanker services, to support vulnerable populations.
This shutdown underscores recurring challenges in Ghana’s water infrastructure, where aging systems and rapid urbanization strain supply networks. Analysts note that such maintenance, though disruptive, reflects GWL’s broader efforts to modernize critical facilities ahead of projected demand spikes in Greater Accra’s expanding suburbs.
For daily updates, GWL encourages residents to monitor its official channels, with assurances that crews will work “round-the-clock” to complete repairs ahead of schedule if possible.
