African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) commanders on Wednesday expressed confidence in the pursuit of peace and stability in the Horn of Africa nation.
Dickson Rutto, outgoing commander of the AMISOM Kenyan contingent who officially handed over office to incoming commander Paul Njema, called for increased military operations against al-Shabab to help secure Somalia and Kenya.
“We have cleared roads, sunk boreholes, and provided medical support to our dear Somali brothers and sisters. We know this can only be improved,” Rutto said in a statement issued after the hand-over to Njema, who will be in charge of AMISOM Sector II, which is under the responsibility of the Kenyan Defense Forces (KDF).
AMISOM troops from Kenya have successfully degraded terrorists in the area, said Rutto, who served as commander of the eighth AMISOM KDF contingent during his one-year tour of duty in Somalia. Njema will oversee the operations of the ninth AMISOM KDF contingent. Enditem
