The National Executive Committee (NEC), the highest decision-making body of the African National Congress (ANC), is set to meet this weekend to discuss several developments around the party, ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe said Thursday.
The NEC meeting came after the ANC announced the suspension of Secretary-General Ace Magashule’s membership pending the finalization of his corruption trial. The suspension which became effective from May 3 prohibited him from making any statements about the party.
Hours after the suspension announcement, Magashule issued a letter which said he was suspending the ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa.
“The African National Congress notes the letter written by the Secretary General comrade Ace Magashule to the ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa,” Mabe said, stressing that any decision regarding a suspension should come from the NEC not an individual.
“The ANC has requested that the Secretary General respect the decisions of the NEC and subject himself to the discipline of the organization,” he added. Enditem
