Since Swansea City last played in the Premier League in 2018, there have inevitably been changes in the squad. But if they are to once again win promotion from the Championship in 2020/21, it will be in no small part thanks to one of their longest-serving players in recent memory, forward Andre Ayew.

The Swans captain has been a constant and an integral part of this year’s lineup, starting all but two games and making a decisive impact alongside strike partner Jamal Lowe at the top of the field. Manager Steve Cooper’s faith in Ayew has been rewarded to the tune of 9 goals and 2 assists at the halfway point in the campaign, placing him joint seventh in the league.

Swansea fans have reason to be excited about Ayew’s performances so far in the campaign. The Swans are favored to win promotion from a congested field at the top of the Championship, and are currently sitting 10/11 at William Hill. This is possibly due in part to a recent hammer blow struck by Ayew that has helped Swansea pull away from the teams below them.

Ayew opened the scoring in Swansea’s 2-0 victory over league leaders Norwich City. This keeps them firmly in the race for automatic promotion alongside the Canaries and Brentford, who knocked Swansea out of the playoffs at the semi-final stage last year. That playoff heartbreak came despite Swansea leading 1-0 from a first leg Ayew wonder goal and was an understandably devastating result. So, now Swansea fans will be hoping to avoid the added drama by securing a place in the Championship’s top two this time around. Yet whether this is possible remains to be seen.

Interestingly, if Swansea were to maintain this good form heading into the second half of the season, the effects could be felt throughout the club’s finances for years to come. In fact, experts estimate the financial impact of promotion to the Premier League could scale upwards of a staggering £170 million yearly. This revenue would be made up of sponsorship rights, final league position, and how often TV rights-holders choose a game for a live broadcast. So, it appears that there’s more than just the glory of a win on the line.

Looking back at Ayew’s triumphs, it is undeniable that he has been one of Swansea’s defining players of the last decade. Playing for the Swans across two spells either side of a high-profile transfer to West Ham United, his impact is palpable. In 2018-19 he went out on loan to Fenerbahçe but returned last year to help Swansea to an improbable last-gasp leap into sixth place. Ayew’s input also helped them to a spot in the playoffs, at the expense of Nottingham Forest thanks to an unprecedented six-goal swing on the final day.

Although that promotion bid was ultimately unsuccessful, Ayew was named both Players’ and Supporters’ Player of the Year, as well as finishing as the club’s top goalscorer with 18 goals. Ayew credited the manager’s influence on the team for his great season, saying, “He [Cooper] has quality and you can see we have an identity and style of play. We have a lot of young players and he believes in youth and making players better.” Cooper has also been able to combine that youth with Ayew’s experience and that of veteran Conor Hourihane, on loan from Aston Villa, to put Swansea in an even better position in the 2020/21 season.

Elsewhere, Ayew is one of several Ghana national squad players looking to break into England’s top tier this year. Fellow title challengers Brentford have versatile winger Tariqe Fosu-Henry, while full-back Andy Yiadom currently plays for a Reading team sitting in the play-off positions, meaning there is a lot of interest for the Black Stars at the top of the Championship. They’ll be looking to join national squad teammates Thomas Partey of Arsenal and Crystal Palace’s Jordan Ayew in the Premier League next season.
