Anglogold Considers Closure Of Obuasi Mine

AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem (AAI) Gold Mines has organised a health screening exercise for more than 400 people made up of staff members and their dependents as well as residents of the communities.

They were screened for diabetes, hypertension, dental, eye, ear, nose and throat ailments.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, the Resident medical personnel of AAI Gold Mines, Dr. Kwasi Gyenin Anor, said the company decided to organise the health screening every three months to ensure that the beneficiaries were fit and strong.

He said at the end of the exercise, those identified with unusual conditions would be referred to the Tarkwa Municipal hospital and other health facilities outside the municipality for treatment.

“We believe that if our employees are healthy they will work safely without recording any injury and accident at the work place” according to Dr. Anor.

He said AAI Gold Mines has distributed lots of free insecticide treatment bed nets and this he noted had reduced malaria cases drastically in their catchment communities.

Apart from that, Dr. Anor said they have an active HIV/AIDS control programme to fight against the disease.

He urged Ghanaians to undergo regular medical check-ups to minimise preventable health issues.

Dr. Anor stressed that most deaths could be avoided if people go for periodic medical screening to know their health status.

Mr. Emmanuel Baidoo, Senior Manager, Sustainability, AAI Gold Mines, said the company was committed to improve upon the well-being of its employees, dependents and residents of their host communities.

He said the exercise would encourage their employees to practice healthy life styles.

Mr. Baidoo stated that “We believe that getting our employees to know their health status was a way of helping them to take good care of their health in the festive season”
