Annual snow festival begins in Sapporo

SAPPORO (Kyodo) — The annual Sapporo Snow Festival began Monday in the capital of Hokkaido, featuring some 230 snow sculptures, such as a 15-meter-tall Tsurugajo Castle of Fukushima Prefecture that was made to represent people’s wishes for recovery from the March disaster.

Organizers expect to draw more than 2 million people to three exhibition sites in Sapporo through Sunday.

“I’m impressed that details of the sculptures, such as tiles of the castle, are created carefully,” said Michiyo Maeshima, 70, from Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture. “It’s beautiful as white sculptures contrast sharply with the blue sky.”
