Anti-cult students on trial for killing colleague

Mufutau Saheed and Adeeko Olamilekun allegedly tortured Adeola Balogun to death because they thought he was a cultist

Two students of the Osun State Polytechnic, Mufutau Saheed and Adeeko Olamilekun, are on trial for allegedly killing a colleague by torture over fears he was a cultist.

Arraigned before an Osogbo Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, the duo, who are members of an anti-cultism para-military group in the school, were alleged to have arrested and tortured some fellow students on the suspicion that they were cultists. In the process, one of the students, Adeola Balogun, died.

The police prosecutor told the court that Balogun was brutalised and tortured to death; even as he denied belonging to any cult group, while the other students tortured along with him are receiving emergency care in the hospital.

The accused persons were arraigned on a two- count charge of felony and murder; contrary and punishable under Section 324 of the Criminal Code CAP 34, Vol. II, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2003.

Magistrate Olusola Aluko did not take the plea of the accused persons, but ordered the investigating police officer to duplicate and forward the case file to the Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice.

The magistrate thereafter remanded the accused persons at Ilesa Prison and adjourned the case till July 11.
