Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, Member of Parliament for Ellembelle, has criticised President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for allegedly distorting the history of Ghana’s founding.

In a statement, Buah reaffirmed that Dr Kwame Nkrumah is the rightful founder of modern Ghana.

The dispute, which has sparked a heated debate in Ghana’s political circles, follows President Akufo-Addo’s comments during his Founders’ Day address on August 3, 2024.

The August 3disputed the notion that Nkrumah was solely responsible for Ghana’s independence, emphasising a collective struggle involving multiple figures and organisations.

In 2019, Ghana’s Parliament established August 4 as Founders’ Day, a day to honor all contributors to the nation’s independence, while September 21 was designated as Nkrumah Memorial Day, a day to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

President Akufo-Addo highlighted the roles of various groups and individuals, such as the Aborigines Rights Protection Society and the British West African Nation Congress, in Ghana’s path to independence.

He acknowledged Nkrumah’s pivotal role but argued that the fight for freedom was a collective effort.

Responding to the president’s remarks, Armah-Kofi Buah reaffirmed Nkrumah’s central role in Ghana’s liberation.

This reaffirmation is intended to reassure us all about the accuracy of the historical narrative.

“The historical facts unequivocally demonstrate that Nkrumah spearheaded the struggle for Ghana’s liberation from colonial rule, making him the Primus inter pares of Ghana’s independence movement,” Buah stated.

Buah argued that while many contributed to the independence struggle, Nkrumah’s leadership and vision were crucial.

He pointed to Nkrumah’s return from the United States in 1947 and establishing the Convention People’s Party (CPP) in 1949 as critical moments in the fight for independence.

Buah highlighted Nkrumah’s unique ability to mobilise the masses and his advocacy for Pan-Africanism, which were instrumental in Ghana’s liberation.

This reiteration of Nkrumah’s leadership is meant to inspire us all with his vision and determination.

He reiterated that Ghana’s independence on March 6, 1957, was a large march 6 to Nkrumah’s leadership.

Buah urged President Akufo-Addo to recognise Nkrumah’s undisputed role as modern Ghana’s founder, emphasising that political propaganda cannot alter historical truths.
