An armed attack on a refugee camp in Ethiopia’s western Gambella region has left four people dead, an Ethiopian official said.

Abula Ubong, the commissioner of the Gambella region police commission, said Sunday that an attack by unidentified gunmen Saturday evening in Ukasa refugee camp near Gambella, the regional capital, left four people dead.

Gambella region is currently home to a large number of South Sudanese refugees who fled their home country after the outbreak of a civil war in December 2013.

The Gambella region has also suffered from periodic deadly cross-border raids by gunmen from neighboring South Sudan. Ethnic communities in both Ethiopia and South Sudan have frequently clashed over land, livestock and resources such as grazing rights and water.

Ubong said a separate attack by two unidentified gunmen riding on a motorcycle in Merkes locality of Gambella regional state Sunday evening left two more people dead, adding security forces are conducting search operations together with local communities to identify and apprehend the suspects behind the two separate attacks.
