In a league where a solid defensive midfielder often correlates with a team’s success, Arsenal’s medical team has faced significant challenges managing Thomas Partey’s fitness over the past two seasons.

However, with Partey anchoring the midfield in Arsenal’s recent 2-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers, the team hopes the 31-year-old Ghanaian can remain injury-free and contribute consistently throughout the season.

Mikel Arteta’s tenure at Arsenal began on December 20, 2019, following Unai Emery’s departure and Freddie Ljungberg’s brief interim period.

Arteta quickly clarified his expectations, emphasising players’ need to take responsibility and exhibit passion and energy. His vision was revitalising Arsenal and restoring it to the competitive heights it enjoyed under Arsène Wenger.

Arteta’s first signings included Pablo Mari, Cedric Soares, Alex Runarsson, Willian, and Gabriel Magalhães, signalling his intent to reshape the squad.

The arrival of Thomas Partey on October 5, 2020, from Atletico Madrid, after triggering his £45 million release clause, was a significant statement. Partey’s transfer came with Lucas Torreira moving to Atletico on a season-long loan.

Upon his arrival, Partey immediately aligned himself with Arteta’s vision, stating, “That’s the club’s objective and mine. We have to get back to where we belong.” This unwavering commitment from Partey reassures Arsenal fans and football enthusiasts of his dedication to the team’s success.

His Premier League debut as a substitute against Manchester City showcased his potential, and he has since made 96 appearances for Arsenal. However, Partey has suffered injuries, missing 80 games for club and country over four seasons.

Partey’s absence has been keenly felt. In the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, Arsenal’s Premier League title bids faltered due in part to his injury setbacks.

Partey’s groin and hamstring issues in the latter season saw him miss 34 games, contributing to Arsenal’s failure to clinch the title despite a strong campaign.

A critical loss to Aston Villa in April 2024 further dashed Arsenal’s hopes, allowing Manchester City to secure the title by a narrow margin.

The 2023-24 season was marked by Arsenal’s failure to sustain its lead. Following an impressive start that included an unbeaten record against the traditional top six, the team’s inability to maintain a flawless run in the latter part of the season, coupled with Partey’s injuries, highlighted the challenges Arsenal faced.

Despite significant summer acquisitions, including Declan Rice from West Ham and Jurrien Timber from Ajax, Arsenal’s midfield struggled to match Partey’s influence. His key passes and tackles per game in the previous seasons have demonstrated his importance, with his absence leaving a noticeable void.

Ar Arsenal fans are optimistic that Partey’s fitness will be a critical factor in their title quest.

Mikel Arteta has prioritised dynamism in his midfield, and Partey’s versatility—having been deployed as a right-back in various matches—will be crucial.

If Partey can stay fit, his ability to read the game, break up opposition attacks, and deliver precise long passes could significantly impact Arsenal’s chances. This underlines the pivotal role Partey plays in Arsenal’s title pursuit, making the audience feel the weight of his contribution.

The new season offers renewed hope for Arsenal, with Partey’s role central to their ambitions. The club’s medical team is focused on managing his injuries to maximise his availability.

Although Partey has struggled to reach the 30-appearance mark in a Premier League season, Arsenal fans and Arteta alike are hopeful that this season will be different, potentially marking a change in the English football landscape.
