Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has removed Sabronum Gyaasehene Nana Awua Gyau Atuomi and other traditional leaders, including the Sabronum Akyeamehene and Baamuhene, for their involvement in illegal mining, or “galamsey,” in the Sabronum traditional area.
The decision followed a petition review accusing them of contributing to the destruction of River Asuonfou, the region’s primary water source.
Despite denials and support from some leaders, the investigation of the National Intelligence Bureau’s Bureau corroborated the allegations.
The Asantehene has referred the trio to the police for prosecution and appointed the Akwamuhene of Sabronum as interim caretaker while a new chief is elected.
