Mr Jacob Alanga Assembly Member for Kasoa New Town was elected Acting Presiding Member Presiding (PM) to direct the affairs of the meeting in accordance with the Standing Orders of the assembly to approve the budget since members had failed to elect a substantive PM.
Mr Alanga and Mr Bernard Ayeh Dankwa Assembly Member for Walantu-CP-Top Hill were the contestants and none of them was able to obtain the two third majority votes to secure the position as stated in Act 244 (a)of the 1992 Constitution.
The Assembly has 20 members and after the first round of voting Mr Alanga obtained 12 votes while Mr Dankwa polled eight votes.
During the second round of voting Mr Alanga had 11 and Mr Dankwa obtained 9 votes.
Before the commencement of the elections Mr Ahmed Rufai Ibrahim the Municipal Coordinating Director who is also the Secretary to assembly explained to the members the need to elect a substantive PM.
He appealed to them to put aside their political and personal sentiments to elect a PM to manage the affairs of the assembly in the interest of development.
Alhaji Dramani Habibu Government Appointee who was outside the country when the assembly was inaugurated was sworn in by Ms Felicia Gandedzi the Municipal Magistrate’s Court Judge.
