At least two persons were confirmed dead when an eight-storey building under construction collapsed in Nigeria’s southern city of Owerri, said the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Friday.
Many others were injured following the incident Thursday evening in the capital city of the southern state of Imo.
Evans Ugoh, head of operations for NEMA in Imo, told reporters in Owerri that seven people have been rescued so far.
There are fears that more people, thought to be construction workers, remain trapped in the building.
Rescue operation is continuing and the cause of the collapse is yet to be ascertained, Ugoh said.
“For now, we are focusing on the rescue operation, it will be followed with the investigation on the cause of the collapse,” the emergency official said. Enditem
