At least 5 killed in road crash in northwest Kenya

Road Crash

At least five people were killed and several others were injured in a road accident along a busy northwest highway early Thursday, police said.

The accident occurred at 1:40 a.m. (2340 GMT) and involved four vehicles, including a bus and three others, at Mlango Tatu area along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway, the police said in a security report.

According to the report, three people died on the spot, while two others succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at a local hospital.

Dozens of people have been killed and others wounded in separate accidents in recent weeks, especially during the festive season, according to police statistics.

According to the police, fatal accidents are common in Kenya due to reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, drunk driving, drunk walking, drunk riding and failure to use helmets.

Despite concerted efforts by the state and the private sector to promote highway safety, an estimated 3,500 Kenyans die in road accidents annually, according to the National Transport and Safety Authority.
