UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemns the attack on a memorial ceremony in Iran that killed more than 100 people, a UN spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

“The secretary-general calls for those responsible to be held accountable,” said Florencia Soto Nino, associate spokesperson for Guterres. “The secretary-general expresses his deep condolences to the bereaved families and the people and the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and he wishes the injured a speedy recovery.” Two explosions near the burial site of Iran’s slain general Qassem Soleimani killed at least 103 people and wounded more than 170 others, reported the official IRNA news agency and the semi-official Fars news agency, calling them “terrorist” blasts.

The attack occurred near the Soleimani tomb, where people gathered at the cemetery in Kerman, in southeast Iran, to mark the fourth anniversary of Soleimani’s death in a U.S. drone strike.
