Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat on Sunday conveyed his condolences following the passing of the former Secretary-General of the Organization of the African Unity (OAU).

Edem Kodjo, a prominent Togolese politician and diplomat who was also the Secretary-General of the OAU – the predecessor of the African Union (AU) – from 1978 to 1983, died on Saturday at the age of 82.

The chairperson of the 55-member pan African bloc, in a statement issued on Sunday following the death of Kodjo, described the late former Secretary-General of the OAU as a “life-long pan Africanist.”

“The Chairperson of the AU Commission learned with immense pain of the departure of the great Pan-Africanist, Edem Kodjo, to his last home. A brilliant African intellectual, Edem Kodjo was a distinguished statesman and tireless knight of peace,” an AU statement issued on Sunday read.

“In this painful circumstance, the Chairperson of the AU Commission, on behalf of all the staff of the continental organization in whose service, Edem Kodjo, has sacrificed a lot, and in his personal name, expresses his most sincere and deep condolences to his family, the Togolese people and all the African peoples,” the statement read.

The African continent is mourning the death of Kodjo, who had also served as the Prime Minister of the West African country. Enditem
