The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has welcomed the successful conduct of the National and Provincial Elections in South Africa on May 8.
The Chairperson of the AU Commission particularly congratulated the people of South Africa who have demonstrated their commitment to democracy, peace and stability, according to an AU statement issued on Tuesday.
Mahamat also congratulated President Cyril Ramaphosa for the victory of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party at the national and provincial levels.
He also commended the political parties that participated in the elections, contributing to the growth of the country’s democracy.
The Chairperson noted that the AU election observation mission and other international observers concluded that eligible voters were able to cast their votes in a peaceful, transparent, inclusive and credible manner.
He has reaffirmed AU’s solidarity and support to the Government and people of South Africa, and wished them every success in their efforts to nurture and deepen democratic and participatory governance in their country. Enditem
