The African Union (AU) and the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on stronger cooperation in improving Africa’s public health sector.

The agreement was signed by AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat and WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Gebreyesus on Monday as part of Faki’s two-day working visit to Geneva, Switzerland, the AU said in a statement.

Under the agreement, the WHO will further accelerate its “support toward the establishment of the African Medicines Agency, and collaboration between the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the statement said.

The two organizations also agreed “to jointly support the implementation of the Addis Ababa Call to Action regarding Universal Health Coverage.”

The AU commission chairperson “commended WHO through Dr. Tedros and his teams, including the Africa Regional Office, for their commitment to supporting African priorities and reiterated that public health is a key component of Africa’s development Agenda 2063,” the AU statement said. Enditem
