Audit Committees of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) and Regional Coordinating Councils (RCC) of Northern and Savannah Regions have been inaugurated to streamline financial management at the local government levels.

The inauguration, which took place in Tamale, was part of efforts of the Government of Ghana to tackle issues of financial misappropriation in the public sector.

Alhaji Shani Alhassan Saibu, Northern Regional Minister, speaking during the inauguration, said the Audit Committees were a requirement under the Public Financial Management Act, 2016, Act 921 to assist in the improvement of financial management practices in the districts.

He urged the newly inducted members of the Audit Committees to hold in high esteem their positions while discharging their duties professionally.

He gave the assurance that the Northern Regional Coordinating Council would continue to support the Audit Committees in the discharge of their duties and responsibilities to promote their performance.

Dr Eric Oduro Osae, Director of the Internal Audit Agency, whose speech was read on his behalf, said the Audit Committees were significant in the governance organisations, which required the support of Management and all key stakeholders to execute their mandate to support the Internal Audit Unit, monitoring and external scrutiny.

He advised the Audit Committees to partner Management and all stakeholders to work together with the institution to accomplish efficient management of public funds.
