Away With Mengistu and The Derg: The Sad Case of UEW

Col. Mengistu Haile Mariam, was the Chairman of the Derg, the socialist military junta that governed Ethiopia from 1977 to 1987. The Derg ascended to power in the Ethiopian Revolution following the overthrow of Emperor Haile Selassie.

Mengistu’s bloody consolidation of power between 1977 to 1978, is known as the Ethiopian Red Terror Campaign (a brutal crackdown on opposition groups and civilians following a failed assassination attempt on the life of Mengistu).

Mengistu fled to Zimbabwe, where he still lives, in May 1991, when rebel forces advanced on the Ethiopian Capital, Addis Ababa.

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW), had its Mengistu, the Derg and Red Terror Campaign between 1st October, 2021 and 7th February, 2022.
Within the four (4) months that the Derg governed UEW, six (6) staff were dismissed and a Committee was set up to investigate Alhassan Salifu Bawah on trumped up charges. Bawah’s dismissal letter was already signed and the setting up of the Committee was just a smokescreen to satisfy the requirements of the law.

The Chairman of the Committee was promised the position of Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Pro-VC), should the Committee recommend Bawah’s dismissal.
After the dismissal of Bawah, the next to face the ‘firing squad’ (dismissal), was Prof. Awaisu Imurana Braimah.

Despite pleas from some top officials managing the tertiary education sector in Ghana to the UEW Derg to abandon the dismissal of Bawah, the leadership of the UEW Derg, arrogantly refused to take heed.

Without the intervening event on Wednesday, 2nd February, 2022, thus the reinstatement of Prof. Avoke as Vice-Chancellor (VC) of UEW, UEW would have collapsed by now if the Derg had continued in office.

The College of Distance & e-Learning (CODeL) account was emptied under the Derg in the name of dubious honorarium payments; unnecessary and useless workshops, were organized by the Institute for Teacher Education and Continuing Professional Development (ITECPD), which were nicodemously titled: Capacity Building Workshops, which has saddled UEW with almost a Million Ghana Cedis in bills!
This has largely accounted for the failure of the current administration to pay lecturers’ internship supervision claims, promptly!

A notable leader of the UEW Derg, has bought multiple cars for his girlfriends, with one of such numerous girlfriends being allocated University accommodation, even though she is yet to be confirmed.

A call for a forensic audit of the CODeL and ITECPD accounts, from whatever period that the current UEW administration settles on, would be a justifiable call, in order to retrieve some, if not all of the looted funds.

The UEW Derg should forget of ever assuming the mantle of leadership of UEW again! They are advised to direct their prayers towards avoiding serving jail time, as a result of some alleged criminal acts hanging around their necks, such as forgery of official documents and create, loot and share conspiracies.

Another worry for the Derg leadership centers around issues of plagiarism, which will most likely lead to some of them being stripped of promotions and accordingly humiliated!!

I wish to use this medium to appeal to all UEW stakeholders, especially the convocation reps on the Governing Council elect, to support the current administration headed by Prof. Avoke, to continue its success story!!

Running a public university, especially a troubled university like UEW, is more complicated than scheduling and satisfying the demands and needs of concubines!
