An NGO, Centre for Democratic Governance in Africa, has urged the Federal Government to ban the importation of goods manufactured locally to promote balance of trade.

Dr Dafe Akpocha, Director-General of the centre said on Monday in Lagos that the ban would hasten the growth of local industries.

Akpocha noted that the importation of all manners of goods manufactured locally had caused many companies in the country to fold up.

“For instance, there is no need bringing in electricity metres when they are manufactured locally.

“There are some locally-manufactured products here that can match or do better than the imported products. So it is time we began to encourage our local industries.

“Although the government cannot totally stop importation for now, it can gradually discourage the importation of such goods by supporting local industries.

“The government should urgently tackle electricity and other facilities that will encourage the growth of local industries to compete internationally,? he said.
