It was an epic encounter at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, Kumasi, on early Sunday morning.

Bukom-Banku-and-Ayitey-Powers It was the second time the two boxers had met within a year, and for ginger-haired Powers, the stakes looked high as he went into the match with revenge on his mind.

Having lost to Banku in the middle of last year, Powers was the aggressor throughout the bout, but the former pummeled him to submission in the fourth and fifth rounds to claim victory.

The hard-hitting pugilist with 20 TKOs to his credit took home the GH₡100, 000 prize money at stake and in addition was presented with an SUV Range Rover vehicle.

He also received a ticket for a holiday trip to South Africa.
The bout, a non-title Cruiserweight clash and dubbed ‘Repeat or Revenge’, attracted one of the largest spectators to the Stadium in any boxing event.

Ghana’s music icons including Sarkodie, Shata Wale, Kwaw Kese, D-Black, Efya and Pope Skinney were on hand to add colour to the event, bringing the venue to light with some well-rehearsed stage performances.

With the Amakom stand of the Stadium packed to capacity, and the atmosphere charged the two boxers, both promising to end the fight in the sixth round were ushered into action by referee Emmanuel Brenyah.

The three judges included Messrs Moussa Sakillou and Akibode Eric, both from Benin, as well as Mr Adouh Ahuettey, a Togolese.

Powers adopted a more robust and aggressive style in the early stages, throwing some wild punches at his opponent and occasionally landed some on his face.

Drawing Banku into the middle of the ring, the gingered-haired Ghanaian professional boxer nearly forced the undefeated boxer to visiting the canvass in the latter part of the third round.

This was after Powers caught his opponent with a left hook on the chin, and Banku who was temporarily dazed clinched his opponent to survive the round.

Having been let off the hook, the undefeated Ghanaian Cruiserweight professional boxer, who predicted an early knock-out, came into the fourth and fifth rounds trading hefty punches with his opponent.

Powers with no answers to the barrage of left and right combination of punches been unleashed by the other combatant, decided to call it quit, failing to respond to the bell for the sixth round.
