Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of Ghana’s ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has unveiled a bold initiative to make smartphones more accessible to Ghanaians if he wins the presidency.
Speaking at a campaign event in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba constituency, Dr Bawumia outlined plans to collaborate with phone manufacturers to offer smartphones on a credit basis. Under this scheme, citizens could potentially pay as little as 1 or 2 cedis per month for their devices.
Dr. Bawumia emphasized the goal of bridging the digital divide and empowering more Ghanaians to participate actively in the digital economy. He highlighted that access to smartphones is no longer a luxury but a necessity, crucial for education, business, and social connectivity.
The proposed initiative would involve strategic partnerships with major phone manufacturers to ensure affordability and favourable payment terms for consumers.
Dr. Bawumia also underscored the importance of educating users on maximizing smartphones’ potential for personal and professional development.
If implemented, this plan could significantly enhance technological access across Ghana, fostering a more inclusive and connected society under Dr. Bawumia’s leadership.
