Dr Mahamadu Bawumia, the flagbearer of Ghana’s ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), took a jab at his opponent, John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He labelled Mahama’s tenure as the ‘akonfem’ era—a reference to traditional farming practices symbolising outdated methods—while promoting his vision for a digitalised future for Ghana.

Addressing supporters at the Ofie Mega Walk in Akropong, Bawumia emphasised Ghana’s transition into a digital age, contrasting it with what he characterised as outdated methods under Mahama’s previous administration.

“We are propelling Ghana into the digitalisation age, not the ‘akonfem’ era,” Bawumia declared, outlining his plans to introduce digital systems at customs offices to curb corruption and streamline services such as passport applications. This stark contrast underscores the urgency of change and the potential for progress under my leadership.

Highlighting the benefits of digitalisation, Bawumia described a future where passport applications would be seamless, leveraging stored citizen data to expedite the process.

In a direct critique of Mahama, Bawumia predicted that Mahama’s potential presidency would last only a single term, suggesting a lack of accountability. This criticism underscores the need for strong leadership and accountability, while positioning myself for two terms to ensure continuity and development.

“I want to be president for eight years, ensuring accountability and implementing new policies for Ghana’s progress,” Bawumia affirmed, urging voters to support his candidacy based on his vision for innovation and integrity in leadership.

With the NPP manifesto launch approaching, Bawumia promised not just change, but additional initiatives to advance Ghana through digital transformation and learn from global best practices to bolster national development. This promise should make you feel hopeful and optimistic about the future of our nation.
