Leipzig snatched one point on the road after holding front runners Bayern Munich to a goalless draw at the closer of the 21st round on Sunday.
The Bavarians assumed control from the starting whistle and created the first chance of the game through Thiago Alcantara, whose effort was tipped over the bar by Leipzig goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi with five minutes into the game.
Leipzig had to wait until the 24th minutes to get their first opportunity on target as Timo Werner tested Bayern custodian Manuel Neuer.
Bayern remained the more active side but lacked in ideas and accuracy to beat Gulacsi for the opener.
After the restart, Leipzig had the golden chance to break the deadlock but Marcel Sabitzer pulled over the bar from central position inside the penalty box.
Leipzig gained momentum and squandered another chance moments later as Timo Werner’s shot on target was blocked by David Alaba on the goal-line.
At the other end of the pitch the hosts thought they got a promising opportunity to take the lead but an awarded penalty was reversed by the video assistant referee due to an offside position by Robert Lewandowski with ten minutes into the second half.
The visitors took the reins but remained wastefulness at their finish as Werner was unable to beat Neuer following a one-on-one at the hour mark.
Hansi Flick’s men failed to grab a last-gasp win on home soil as Leon Goretzka saw his close-range effort from inside the box saved by Gulacsi in the closing period.
With the share of the spoils, Bayern Munich stay atop the standings, one point ahead of runner up RB Leipzig.
“I am satisfied with our performance. In the second half we had the better chances and could have even won the game. If we bring our power on the pitch we can hold the pace with Bayern. We want to stay in the top four and that was an important point today,” RB Leipzig head coach Julian Nagelsmann said.
Sunday’s first game among fourth placed Borussia Monchengladbach and 13th positioned Cologne has been cancelled due to a storm and will be rearranged in the coming weeks. Enditem
