Hosts Ghana slipped to a sorry 1-0 defeat to Benin courtesy a late penalty in the Wafu Nations Cup Group A match on Saturday night.
Cedric Corea expertly put away a spot kick on 89 minutes after Kwabena Edusei handled a cross inside the box.
This was shortly after the home-based Black Stars had been reduced to 10 men when left-back Emmanuel Asante was sent off for retaliation.
Benin goalkeeper Saturnin Allagbe did well to keep the scoreline barren especially in the first half with some brilliant saves.
Left-back Asante delivered a pile-driver from range but Allagbe with single-handed save palmed it away for a corner-kick.
Yahaya Mohammed made an excellent run on the right and then sent in a cross which was first mis-kicked by winger Abdul Latif Mohammed and Mohammed Abdul Basit also repeated it.
Latif also shot wide after being put through from midfield as Ghana continued to squander scoring opportunities.
Benin did not mount any strong challenge or real attack as danger man Suanon Fadel was checked by Edusei and Abeiku Ainooson.
Ghana coach Maxwell Konadu shuffled his cards and introduced the Ghana Premier League leading scorer Sulley Mohammed who replaced Yahaya Mohammed.
But that substitution did not quite work out as they failed to create decent chances.
Latif Mohammed again drew a quality save from goalkeeper Allagbe who fingertipped his cross from the left.
Ghana must now beat Burkina Faso in their final match today to advance from the Group stage.
The local Black Stars are now third on the league with Benin and Burkina Faso joint leaders.
