Besiktas lands Pepe in two-year deal

BESIKTAS have signed centre-back Pepe as a free agent after his Real Madrid contract expired, with the Turkish champions publishing pictures of him in a club shirt.

The centre-back could not agree a new deal with Los Blancos after a decade at the Santiago Bernabeu, in which he won La Liga and the Champions League three times each.

Pepe, 34, was a mainstay in the Madrid side after joining from Porto in 2007, appearing 334 times for the club.

Reports in Turkey suggest the Portuguese defender has agreed a two-year deal with the option for a third additional year.

Pepe’s time at Madrid will be considered a success, although a controversial incident in April 2009 in which he savagely kicked Getafe player Javi Casquero and was sent off will also be remembered.

The defender, capped 86 times by his country, struck against Mexico in the Confederations Cup third place play-off to help Portugal emerge triumphant, following up their success at Euro 2016.
