People sometimes criticize Jay-Z and Beyonce for having almost no commitment to real social activism.
But can you blame them? Maybe their behavior is just a reflection of the world in which we live, where a new haircut gets the attention of a pending nuclear holocaust.
Beyonce?s army of loyal fans went nuts this week, but it wasn?t because of something that affects their own lives.
It wasn?t because President Obama signed a major peace treaty, or due to scientists finding a cure for cancer. It was because Beyonce cut her hair.
That?s it. She cut her hair, and people lost their minds.
Within minutes of Beyonce showing a picture of her weaveless self, the image got 15,000 likes, and people were going bananas over the new look.
One person said: ?The price of weave stock just dropped & beauty supply shops are about 2 go under because of #Beyonce?s hair cut?.
Others commented on how many women are now going to cut their hair off and dye it blonde in order to match the singer?s style. Maybe people don?t have their own sense of self or style and are just looking for a celebrity to emulate.
Can you imagine what the world would be like if all that power was being used for something productive and meaningful, like stopping urban violence or getting a better education for kids? Maybe we?re being too serious.
Haircuts might be more important than everything else. It might also be the case that people so unempowered to make the world better than it is that they spend their time draped in a fantasy world. But don?t run out and cut your hair just because Beyonce did it, at least learn to think for yourself.
