While Biden hinted at the need to unite his party and pass the torch to a new generation, he avoided explicitly mentioning that he withdrew because of diminishing electoral prospects against Donald Trump.
This omission left the public to infer his rationale from indirect references.
Despite detailing his accomplishments and asserting that nothing should hinder efforts to save democracy, Biden’s failure to confront the perception of impending defeat to Trump remained conspicuous in his address.
Meanwhile, at a rally in North Carolina, Donald Trump asserted that Biden withdrew due to poor polling numbers and launched attacks against Kamala Harris, Biden’s new running mate.
The televised address allowed Biden to counter these narratives and address concerns about his leadership continuity.
Still, he largely refrained from doing so directly, leaving questions unanswered as the campaign intensified.
