Ghana’s Black Stars will begin their campaign to redeem themselves from a disappointing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a crucial qualifying match against Angola on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

The four-time African champions are eager to put behind them a group-stage exit from the last edition of AFCON, where they failed to win any matches.

The 2025 AFCON presents a fresh opportunity for Ghana to restore their stature in continental football.

Angola, who advanced to the quarterfinals in the previous tournament, will be a formidable opponent.

The match will be officiated by Rwandan referee Samuel Uwikunda, with Dieudonne Mutuyimana and Eric Mugabo as his assistants.

Ruzindana Nsoro will serve as the fourth official, while Sanusi Mohammed from Nigeria will be the match commissioner. Egyptian Elsayed Morad Attaalla will act as the referee assessor.

Under Otto Addo’s guidance, the Black Stars aim to make their 25th appearance at the AFCON finals.

They will face stiff competition in Group F from Angola, Niger, and Sudan. Securing a win against Angola would be a significant step towards qualifying and ending Ghana’s 43-year wait for another AFCON title.

After recent successes in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Ghana comes into this match with confidence, having defeated Mali and the Central African Republic in June.

After their encounter with Angola, the Black Stars will travel to face Niger on Monday, September 9.
