The Bono Regional Minister, Justina Owusu Banahene, has emphasized the transport sector’s crucial role in Ghana’s socioeconomic development and daily life. She highlighted that the industry provides access to goods and services essential for economic growth and improving the quality of life.
Addressing the Bono Regional Dissemination of the Revised National Transport Policy and the National Electric Vehicle Policy in Sunyani, the Minister stressed the importance of having well-defined policies to ensure a sustainable and efficient transport system.
She called for all stakeholders, including car repair garages across the country, to be included in the transition from fossil fuel vehicles to electric vehicles.
She noted that this would equip them with the necessary technical skills to repair electric vehicles when they become faulty. She also advocated introducing disability-friendly electric cars to ensure no one is left behind in the transition.
As the country grapples with climate change and air pollution, the Minister reiterated the need to prioritize environmentally friendly modes of transport, promoting a cleaner and greener future.
In addition, the Chief Director of the Ministry of Transport and Highways, Mrs. Mabel Sagoe, outlined the focus areas of the updated transport policy.
The revised policy aims to create an accessible, reliable, and secure transport system for all, position Ghana as a transport hub in West Africa, and promote sustainable transport. It also seeks to increase investment in the sector and integrate transport planning.
Mrs. Sagoe also underscored the importance of research, development, human resource capacity building, and the application of new technologies.
A key aspect of the revised policy is promoting innovation and the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs).
She highlighted that accessibility and inclusivity are at the core of the revised National Transport Policy and Electric Vehicle Policy, stating that the transport system must cater to all members of society, regardless of age, ability, or socioeconomic status.
She said the goal is to create a more equitable society in which everyone can fully participate in economic, social, and cultural activities.
