The Government of Botswana has revealed it is mindful of an upsurge in incidents of violence targeting certain foreign traders in the Republic of South Africa.
According to statement from Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on Wednesday, the government is through its diplomatic missions continuously monitoring the situation on the ground.
“At this time there are no reports of any Batswana victims in the latest unrest. We shall, however, continue to closely monitor developments,” read the statement.
In the latest strings of unrest in South Africa, xenophobic attacks have been targeted at foreign nationals in the country, more especially in parts of the Durban metropolitan region.
South Africa, as the continent’s largest economy has attracted hundreds of thousands of foreigners to come seek better living by working and operating businesses in the country. Botswana has many of its citizens working and schooling there. A large number of Batswana also cross to South Africa on a daily basis through multiple borders the two countries share on personal or business trips. Enditem
