Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE)’s annual equity market performance recorded a substantial increase, the latest analysis from equity market indices revealed on Thursday.

From January to October 2023, the domestic company index (DCI) appreciated by 13.4 percent in comparison to an increase of 7.7 percent during the corresponding period in 2022, while the foreign company index (FCI) registered a notable increase of 57.6 percent in comparison to a marginal increase of 0.8 percent in 2022, the BSE Chief Executive Officer, Thapelo Tsheole, said in a statement.

Tsheole stressed that on a comparative analysis of equity turnover on a year-to-date basis, the BSE has recorded the highest amount of turnover ever recorded in the history of the exchange, of 3.8 billion pula (about 280 million U.S. dollars) which amounts to an average turnover of 18.6 million pula per day, representing an increase of about 300.5 percent for the same period in 2022.

“This milestone is attributable to the record deal in Botswana Insurance Holdings Limited that amounted to 2.9 billion pula on Sept. 4, and constituted the highest ever single counter, single day trade in the history of the exchange,” said Tsheole.
