Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, a rising star in the world of athletics, made history at the 2024 Summer Olympics.

His journey to the top was not without challenges, but his determination and hard work paid off when he won the men’s 200 meters, becoming the first African to secure gold.

In a remarkable upset, Tebogo triumphed over American sprinter Noah Lyles, who had been favoured to win following his gold medal in the 100 meters. The unexpected turn of events left many in awe.

Lyles ultimately finished with the bronze, while his teammate Kenny Bednarek took the silver.

During the post-race press conference, Tebogo humbly addressed the possibility of becoming the face of athletics. The 21-year-old, in a display of modesty, stated, “I think, for me, I can’t be the face of athletics because I’m not arrogant or loud like Noah (Lyles). So, I believe Noah is the face of athletics.”

His comments have sparked debate about whether they were a veiled critique of Lyles or a simple acknowledgement of Lyles’ prominent status in the sport.

Despite the surprising result, Lyles congratulated Tebogo in person and on social media. His sportsmanship was evident as he praised Tebogo’s performance.

Lyles also disclosed that his Olympic campaign was cut short by a COVID-19 diagnosis. Bednarek, who took the silver, also expressed his admiration for Tebogo’s achievement.
