The bottled water industry in Ghana is huge. Brands are springing up all over the place and the public is accepting the product in good faith obviously believing that what they are getting is better than pipe-borne water. Some claim to be bottled at source but generally the majority of them especially those packaged in plastic sachets, simply passed the same pipe born water through filters which they then dump onto the market as spring water or pure water.
The Food and Drugs Authority which regulate the industry had been active in exposing such products as not meeting the required standards. In a public statement last week, the board suspended the operation of a number of companies for producing without Food and Drugs??Authority?s registration and producing water under unhygienic conditions, which pose risk to public health and safety,
The Food and Drugs Authority said, ??it cannot guarantee the safety and quality of the sachet water from the companies since it had not inspected these premises and has never evaluated these products for safety and quality??. The general public is therefore advised not to patronized them and wholesalers and retailers are also cautioned to remove all such brands from display immediately
The Authority also advised the general public not to hesitate to bring to the attention of the Food and Drugs Authority any person who may be clandestinely operating sachet water plants.
