dpa/GNA – Brazil has registered a record number of coronavirus-related deaths in a single day, according to data from the Health Ministry.
Wednesday’s figure stood at 1,910 deaths within 24 hours, compared to a previous record of 1,641 a day earlier. A total of 259,271 people overall have died in connection with Covid-19 in Brazil.
The latest daily number of infections stood at 71,704, bringing the total tally in the largest country in Latin America to more than 10.7 million.
Brazil, which started vaccinating in January, is one of the countries hardest hit by the pandemic globally.
After the collapse of the health system in the city of Manaus, health-care systems in other cities such as Sao Paulo are now also on the verge of collapse.
In the southern states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, hospitals are full and are using refrigerated containers for the bodies of the dead.
President Jair Bolsonaro has downplayed the virus from the start and recently fundamentally questioned the point of the vaccine drive.
