At the 25th International AIDS Conference in Munich, Germany, the unveiling of the groundbreaking results from the PURPOSE 1 trial of twice-yearly injectable lenacapavir for HIV prevention sparked excitement and hope.

Linda-Gail Bekker presented the full findings, highlighting that lenacapavir achieved 100% efficacy in preventing HIV transmission among cisgender women.

Sharon Lewin, President of the International AIDS Society and Director of the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity at the University of Melbourne, hailed the results as a significant breakthrough with profound public health implications.

She underscored the potential transformative impact of lenacapavir if swiftly approved and distributed equitably to those in need, instilling a sense of optimism and inspiration.

“These data confirm that twice-yearly lenacapavir for HIV prevention is a breakthrough advance with substantial public health potential.

If approved and delivered – rapidly, affordably, and equitably – to those who need or want it, this long-acting tool could help accelerate global progress in HIV prevention. We all owe a debt of gratitude to the thousands of young women in South Africa and Uganda who volunteered to be part of this study,” Lewin stated.

Looking forward, Lewin highlighted the importance of forthcoming results from PURPOSE 2, which will assess lenacapavir’s efficacy in other populations and countries. She urged global stakeholders to collaborate in advancing the equitable delivery of existing HIV prevention options and preparing for future advancements like lenacapavir for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), keeping the audience engaged and eager for future developments.

“Much of this work is underway this week at AIDS 2024 and will continue at HIVR4P 2024, the 5th HIV Research for Prevention Conference, scheduled for October 6 to 10, 2024, in Lima, Peru, and virtually,” Lewin added, underscoring ongoing efforts in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
