dpa/GNA – The German Cup quarter-final match between second division Jahn Regensburg and Werder Bremen on Tuesday, is threatened with cancellation after Regensburg reported further coronavirus cases, following the news that coach Mersad Selimbegovic has suffered an infection.
Regesnburg, managing director Christian Keller, told a news conference on Monday he expects the game to be postponed, while Bremen “also assume the match will not take place,” the Bundesliga club said in a statement.
Selimbegovic tested positive for coronavirus on Friday. Regensburg could still play their second division game against Paderborn at the weekend in accordance to the German football league (DFL) hygiene concept, but other players returned positive tests on Sunday.
According to Keller, he was already notified by health authorities that the entire team and the support staff must now be quarantined.
A written confirmation is necessary so it can serve as the basis for cancelling the Cup match. The health authorities in Regensburg and the German football federation (DFB) haven’t made any official announcement.
Regensburg also expect their second league dates at VfL Osnabrueck on March 7, and against Greuther Fuerth at home on March 13 will also be cancelled.
