Buhari advised to look into Senior Citizens? Welfare

Praise Jonathan for Strengthening Democracy

Nigerians living in the United Kingdom under the aegis of the two biggest umbrella bodies, National Association of Nigerian Communities (NANC)? in the UK and the Central Association of Nigerians in the UK, CANUK, have tasked the newly sworn in administration of President Muhammadu Buhari and ?Vice ? President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, to empower the youths , while not neglecting the senior citizens.

They also praised former President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan , for restoring Nigeria?s pride in the comity of nations, with his role in the peaceful transition of power to Buhari .

CANUK? chair , Tunde Loye, in an interview with the Daily Times,? urged the new administration to provide both training and education opportunities for young people and ensure that the senior citizens are well looked after. Asked what message he had for the All Progressives Congress (APC) government, he said: ?I will tell them to engage and empower the youths,? because ?these are our future.?

He added: ?They should make sure they get people employed , and not allow them to be roaming around the streets ,? because being idle ?can lead them to a lot of ills, such as armed robbery and other crimes.?

The insurance executive? continued: ??The senior citizens should also be taken care of. A lot of people there don?t have their pension, they don?t even understand it.?

Urging the government to take a cue from the UK,? Loye? said: ?Over here ? in the UK ? they take care of the senior citizens ,? so? ? they should copy that back home and do the right thing.?

On its? part, NANC (UK), in a? press? release made available to the Daily Times, praised Jonathan for facilitating a smooth transition of power to the opposition. NANC, through it?s president, Sir Martins Bakare, described Jonathnan?s gesture as not only ?an unprecedented and unexpected outcome,? (among African leaders, including Nigeria), but also a restoration of Nigeria?s national pride.

?National pride was restored immediately, ? when? ?Jonathan conceded defeat in the March Presidential election ,? the statement? also noted. More importantly,? ?this sent out a message? to other African States that the power of incumbency should not be ?abused to perpetuate a regime in power.?
The NANC president also noted that the smooth handover of power has confirmed Nigeria?s place as? the biggest democracy on the continent. The community leader described Buhari as: ? a man with integrity, experience and possible passion to move Nigeria forward.?
