A tanker laden with petrol fell and spilled its content on a busy road in Nigeria’s southeastern city of Onitsha on Wednesday, causing a huge fire that burnt down at least six buildings.
Andrew Kumapayi, head of the State Federal Road Safety Commission, who confirmed this to Xinhua in Awka, capital of Anambra State, said the tanker lost control due to break failure.
He added that the head of the vehicle pulled out while the tank containing diesel fell into the gutter, spilling its content on the road, and caught fire due to the spill.
Kumapayi said the fire service officials got to the scene of the fire promptly, but could not put out the fire as their water pump developed fault.
According to him, the fire spread through the gutter and affected about six houses on the road.
No life was lost and no other vehicle was affected, he added.
Kumapayi warned tanker owners and drivers to ensure that their vehicles are in good condition before hitting the road. Enditem
