Out of the 89 MPs present, 88 voted in favor of the amendment which rules out any future constitutional changes seeking to scrap the presidential term limits.
“No such procedure to revise the constitution should be carried out, whether in a case of a vacancy in the office of the president or even during a state of emergency,” the provision states.
Under the country’s constitution, “in no case will anyone be allowed to serve as Burkina Faso president for more than two terms either consecutively or intermittently.”
Former President Blaise Compaore was forced to resign in October 2014 amid protests against his bid for a constitutional change to allow him to seek re-election.
Compaore had been in power for 27 years.
Presidential elections are expected to be held in Burkina Faso on Nov. 29 to end the transitional period. Enditem
