The incident occurred on Sunday, two days after an attack at a weapons depot situated near Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso capital, for which ex-RSP soldiers have been accused of involvement.
“Following the operations launched after the attack at the Yimdi weapons depot on Jan. 22, five assailants who were members of ex-RSP, were arrested on Sunday afternoon as they attempted to cross the border to Ghana,” Burkina Faso’s army boss wrote on his Facebook page.
“During the arrest, one of the fugitives opened fire on our intervention forces, leading to a counter attack. The fugitive who was seriously injured in the confrontation that ensued, succumbed to his injuries while being taken to hospital by helicopter,” he added.
According to Burkinabe army sources, the arrests bring the number of those arrested in relation to the attack at the armoury to 16.
Over the weekend, ten soldiers who were members of ex-RSP and a cleric were arrested on suspicion of involvement in the matter.
Ex-RSP is the former presidential guard of president Blaise Compaore who was forced to resign after a uprising in October 2014. Enditem
