Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza Sunday said the country’s defense and security forces are on alert to counter possible attacks by Somali al-Shabaab insurgents, the Burundian president told a press conference.
“We are concerned about the announcement of possible attacks by the Somali al-Shabaab insurgents against contributor countries of troops in the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). Burundi is one of those countries and our security and defense forces are on alert to counter any terrorists’ attack,” said Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza.
He indicated that he had come to his office to discuss over the phone with his Kenyan and Ugandan counterparts, whose countries are also, like Burundi, contributors of troops in the AMISOM.
“Our three countries are privileged targets of al-Shabaab. That is why we were discussing to seek appropriate strategies and measures to counter their (al-Shabaab) attacks,” said Nkurunziza.
Nkurunziza’s press conference constituted his public appearance after a failed coup plot staged Wednesday while he was in Tanzania to attend a regional summit on Burundi. Enditem
