Burundi and delegates from China’s Sichuan province signed three agreements Thursday on agricultural cooperation.

The signing ceremony took place in the Burundian commercial capital of Bujumbura between Burundian farming officials and delegates from Sichuan.

“Three important things happened between the Burundian party and the Chinese party from the province of Sichuan. The main thing was the overall signing of the general framework on the implementation of the agreements. It was signed by the Burundian agriculture minister and the chief of rural affairs in the province of Sichuan,” Burundian Environment, Agriculture and Livestock Minister Prosper Dodiko briefed journalists after the signing of the agreements.

Dodiko said that one of the other two agreements was signed between the manager of the Burundi Agricultural Research Institute (ISABU) and the agricultural research institute of Sichuan, while the third one was signed between the ISABU and a seed center in Sichuan province.

“The next step will be the setting up of a seed center in Burundi,” said Dodiko.

According to him, the seed center will produce hybrid seeds, and the first ones to start with will be maize and rice.

The Chinese delegates from the province of Sichuan were led by Hu Yun, vice-governor of Sichuan.

On Wednesday, those delegates met with Burundian Prime Minister Gervais Ndirakobuca and discussed four priority sectors of cooperation — economic investment, modern farming, infrastructure and the fight against poverty.

Burundi and China have enjoyed fruitful cooperation since 1963. The main sectors of cooperation include agriculture, infrastructure, energy and health.
