Burundi’s former PM in detention

Former Burundian Prime Minister Alain Guillaume Bunyoni was arrested on Friday, said the Attorney General of the Republic of Burundi on Sunday without clarifying the reason.

“On April 21, 2023, Police General Alain Guillaume Bunyoni was apprehended at Nyamuzi, in Mubone zone, district of Kabezi in the province of Bujumbura where he was hiding,” said Burundian Attorney General Sylvestre Nyandwi in a press release.

Also being a former police chief, Bunyoni was appointed prime minister in 2020, but was sacked in September 2022 by President Evariste Ndayishimiye over accusations of “an attempted coup plot.”

Since then, Bunyoni kept his police rank despite the accusations, until the authorities started a search operation against him, who reportedly had been warned in advance and escaped from the operation.

The attorney general indicated that the prosecution carried out the search at Bunyoni’s home on April 17, following reports of “offenses that he may have perpetrated.”

On April 19, Minister of Interior, Community Development and Public Security Martin Niteretse told a press conference that Bunyoni “could not be found after a search at his houses.”

“Results of the search and other indices will be soon analyzed for an appropriate follow-up according to the code of criminal procedure.” Enditem
